One of my all-time favourite cocktails is the classic cosmopolitan. This drink originated in the United States but there is debate as to who actually created the first Cosmo. Some popular claims include Neal Murray (Minneapolis), John Cain (San Fransico), Cheryl Cook (South Beach) and Toby Cecchini (Manhattan). No matter who the creator, this drink is delicious!

Don’t be tricked by the pretty pink colour, this drink isn’t for the faint of heart! As with a martini, this cocktail is meant to sip on slowly. Too many of them and you may not feel so good in the morning!

There are several different variations to the recipe which call for different amounts of the same four ingredients: Vodka, Triple Sec or Cointreau, cranberry juice, and juice from a fresh lime.

Perfect Cosmopolitan Ingredients
All you need is four ingredients for this classic cocktail!

My personal favourite variation of this cocktail includes equal amounts of Vodka and Triple Sec/Cointreau. Mix with 2 parts cranberry juice and the juice from half a small lime.

I like to use these small bottles of cranberry juice since I don’t drink the juice often enough to finish a big jug. I also like to use the diet because, well, it just makes me feel better!

If you don’t have any fresh lime you can use a few drops of store-bought lime juice. Just don’t add too much as the store-bought juice is more concentrated and can overpower the taste of cranberry. Click here for an interesting discussion on fresh versus concentrate juice.

You can shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker you can use pretty much anything. I like using mason jars. I always have some lying around and you can make a larger batch to keep in the fridge!

Cocktail shakers for Cosmo
You can use pretty much anything to mix your cocktail!

However, if you want to get fancy you can purchase a cocktail shaker for less than $20!

After you’ve mixed the four ingredients to your liking, pour in a chilled glass and enjoy! My martini glasses were stored away in the garage from our last move so I opted for a margarita glass instead. It doesn’t matter what type of glass you use!

If you would like to get some martini glasses for a party or just to use for yourself, check these ones out.

After all, a real Cosmopolitan looks so much more refined in a martini glass!
