I sometimes wonder how people decide to take that first big trip. The trip that takes them away from their everyday lives and places them in a new reality. Submerges them in a completely new culture. Opens their eyes to a new world.

What was the deciding factor for us? House hunting frustration! Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the process of looking for a new home. It was exciting but also a bit daunting. We saw some great places, amazing homes, and also some pretty crazy things. I mean, who expects to find a horse living in someone’s garage!

After being outbid and having deals fall through, the enjoyment slowly turned to frustration, stress and full-on heartbreak. The answer may seem irresponsible to some but what we needed was time away from, what seemed at the time, our bleak reality. So we spent some of that hard-earned down payment and hopped on a plane. It may have taken us a few extra years – okay 6 to be exact – but we did end up getting the perfect place to call home.

One word of warning to those of you who are contemplating their first major trip – be prepared to get bitten by the travel bug! There is no cure, however, you alleviate the symptoms by travelling as much as possible! Don’t be afraid because this will result in amazing memories that will last a lifetime!
