While visiting Nassau, Bahamas, we decided to visit Ardastra Gardens and Zoo. Although small, this was a delightful zoo that takes about half a day to visit. There are over 135 species of mammals, reptiles and birds to see. The zoo is self-guided, with a series of trails meandering through 4 acres of lush tropical gardens. We had a great time during our visit and hopefully will be able to visit again someday soon!
The Birds of Ardastra Zoo
The encounters with birds at this zoo are what really made our visit special. Throughout the trails you will come across beautiful macaws, all colours of the rainbow. Here are just few photos of these beauties.
Macaws are not the only birds you will encounter along the paths. Peacocks and peahens can be seen wandering freely around the zoo. Be on the look-out for the albino peacock. He is so handsome!
Flamingoes also have free reign of the zoo and can be seen casually walking the paths. Be sure not to miss the flamingo encounter. This show starts off with a group of trained flamingoes walking around a pen and following simple commands by the trainer. In the end, audience members are given the opportunity to get photos with the group.
By far, the best experience at the zoo was feeding the Lorry parrots! There are three feeding times throughout the day. This was an amazing way to interact with these beautiful birds. The Lorry parrots would fly right onto your arm to eat the apples from your hand.
Other Amazing Creatures
The Ardastra Zoo is home to some other amazing mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Many of the animals are free to roam as they please. Since the zoo is self-guided, there are informational papers throughout the trails acknowledging the different species and providing some fun facts about each.
Don’t Forget Your Souvenirs!
In order to continue running and meet their operational needs, Ardastra Zoo depends on philanthropic support from the public. Before you leave, don’t forget to pick up a few souvenirs from the gift shop and consider leaving a small donation. There is a small gift shop and snack bar called Toby’s Treasures right by the zoo’s exit. It has lots of great souvenirs that are reasonably priced.
We spent this day at Ardastra Zoo as a shore excursion while on our Norwegian Sun cruise to the Bahamas. You can find out more about Norwegian Cruise Lines shore excursions here.
