We recently had the pleasure of spending a weekend ice fishing getaway at Snowshoe Camp Resort. Although our trip was delayed by a few hours due to a winter snowstorm, the weather was fantastic for the rest of the weekend. This resort is owned by Laura and Brent Shergold and is located on Wakamota Lake in Northern Ontario, Canada. The camp can be accessed by vehicle but is far enough from the main highway to provide an authentic wilderness experience.
Winter activities
There are a variety of fun winter activities to keep you occupied while staying at Snowshoe Camp Resort. Our main focus for this particular weekend was ice fishing, however, it is also a great place to go snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross country skiing!
Ice fishing getaway
Wakamota Lake is an ideal location for fishing. The lake can be fished for lake trout, whitefish, ling, pike, perch, and smallmouth bass. There are also a few surrounding lakes that can be accessed which provide for good Splake and Speckled Trout fishing. We decided to take our snowmobile to Dam Lake and were rewarded by catching some perch and splake!
Our cabin
Snowshoe Camp Resort has six housekeeping cabins that are fully-equipped. We stayed in the three-bedroom Beaver Lodge cabin. As with our cabin, all come with hot running water, full kitchens (ie. fridge, sink and stove), full bathrooms (ie. toilet and shower), electric heat and a wood burning stove. Beaver Lodge cabin has a beautiful view of the lake with a large outdoor deck and BBQ. It was so nice to curl up with a good book by the wood fire stove after a day of playing on the snow!
Recreation hall
All guests at Snowshoe Camp Resort have access to the Recreation Hall. This is a common room with a lounge area, ping pong and pool tables, and a fridge and stove. It is a perfect place to spend time with a larger group or to socialize with other guests.
A great ice fishing getaway!
