Cayo Coco is an island in the Jardines del Ray chain of central Cuba. Cayo Coco’s landscape consists of many natural features such as lagoons and marshes. This makes the area perfect habitat for native bird species. In fact, the island is actually named after the white ibis, known locally as the coco (coconut) bird.
In 2017, Cayo Coco was hit by Hurricane Irma. This was one of the strongest storms on record to hit the open Atlantic region. The hurricane caused extensive and severe damage, closing the airport and resorts for several weeks. Since that time, the residents have worked very hard to get the island back up and running, and their hard work is showing! All of the resorts are open and the international airport was rebuilt.
Visiting places that have recently experienced disaster helps the local economy. Residents and resort employees have worked very hard to repair the damage left in the wake of the hurricane. Tourist dollars and tips brought into the country really helps. This is a great reason to book your next trip to Cayo Coco, Cuba, but it’s not the only reason! Here are some of the other reasons why we love this beautiful island!
The Culture
The Cuban people are very warm and inviting and have a very rich culture. Many of the resorts in Cayo Coco have nightly entertainment in which you can get a glimpse into the Cuban culture. Also, if you get a chance pick up some local art work at the market to bring home. Make sure that the work has an official stamp from “Registro Nacional de Bienes Culturales” (known as BFC) otherwise it may get confiscated at the airport. Also, if you are purchasing art from an art gallery that is considered national heritage be aware that there is a process involved and that you will need to get a proper receipt and stamp to export the art. It may seem like a hassle but it is well worth it!
The Beaches in Cayo Coco
The. Beaches. Are. Beautiful…. What else can we say? Cayo Coco has some really amazing beaches with super fine, white sand and crystal clear blue water. Although Hurricane Irma caused severe damage to the existing infrastructure and vegetation it is said to have one positive effect. That is, enlarging the beaches by bringing in more sand to the area.
The Cars
If you are a fan of classic cars than Cuba is the place to go! American cars and mechanical parts were banned from being imported to Cuba in the early 60’s due to the U.S. embargo. As a result, many of the old cars in Cuba have been kept in great condition and working order.
The Coffee
The coffee in Cayo Coco, particularly the espresso, is to die for! We were a little upset to find out that we didn’t have a coffee machine in our room at the resort we stayed at (we are morning coffee drinkers through and through), however, it gave us the opportunity to get a fresh cup of espresso from the bar in the early mornings and it was pure heaven!
The Cigars
It is a well-known fact that the best tobacco is grown in Cuba so if you enjoy cigars then Cuba is the place to go. Some of the best selling Cuban cigars include Partagas, Cohiba, Romeo Y Juleita, and Montecristo.
