When you think of iconic family destinations, Niagara Falls easily tops the list. With its breathtaking natural beauty, fun attractions, and family-friendly vibe, it was the perfect choice for our recent getaway. In this post, I’ll share our experience — from where we stayed to what we loved doing — to help you plan your own unforgettable family trip to Niagara Falls!

Why we chose Niagara Falls, Canada

Niagara Falls is a fantastic choice for a family trip because it offers a perfect mix of natural wonder, fun attractions, and memorable experiences for all ages. We were awestruck by the sheer power and beauty of the Falls and there was plenty of ways to experience them up close — from boat tours to scenic viewpoints. Beyond the waterfalls, the area is packed with family-friendly activities like Clifton Hill’s vibrant entertainment district, the fascinating Bird Kingdom, interactive museums, and the towering Niagara SkyWheel. Add in a wide variety of restaurants, parks, and convenient accommodations, and you’ve got an easy-to-plan getaway!

Where we stayed

We chose to stay on the Canadian side of the falls which we highly recommend for the best views! There are plenty of family-friendly hotels, many within walking distance of the falls and attractions. We booked a room at the Embassy Suites Fallsview, which offered stunning views of Horseshoe Falls right from our window. I loved waking up to the falls first thing in the morning!

Tip: If you can, splurge on a fallsview room — it’s totally worth it!

Top Things We Did as a Family at Niagara Falls

Seeing the Falls Up Close

Of course, the main event of any Niagara trip is simply seeing the falls themselves. It’s every bit as awe-inspiring as you’d imagine. We spent a good chunk of time just walking along the Niagara Parkway, which offers panoramic views of Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The sheer power and roar of the water captivated us all — we were mesmerized. We visited both during the day to see the rainbow forming in the mist, and again at night when the falls were illuminated in vibrant colors. The nighttime Falls Illumination and seasonal fireworks show (check the schedule!) were an absolute highlight and made for a magical family moment.

Clifton Hill

No family trip to Niagara Falls would be complete without a visit to Clifton Hill, known as the “Street of Fun by the Falls.” Clifton Hill is packed with attractions like arcades, mini golf, haunted houses, and sweet shops. It’s a bit touristy — but that’s part of the charm! It’s the perfect spot to let loose after a day of exploring the falls.

Giant SkyWheel

One of the highlights of our visit to Clifton Hill was riding the Niagara SkyWheel. This is a massive Ferris wheel that offers some of the best views of the falls and the surrounding city. The fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas made it comfortable. As we slowly ascended, we were able to see the Falls come into view from high above. The ride lasts about 8 to 12 minutes, giving you plenty of time to take in the scenery and snap some photos. We highly recommend riding it at dusk or after dark when the falls are lit up. It’s a truly magical experience!

Ripley’s Believe it or not

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Niagara Falls is a fun attraction for families and curious minds of all ages. This quirky museum is packed with fascinating oddities, interactive exhibits, and unbelievable artifacts from around the world. From mind-bending optical illusions to extraordinary human feats and unusual art, every corner of the museum sparks wonder and conversation. The self-paced experience lets you explore at your leisure, making it a fun and flexible stop during your Niagara adventure. It’s the perfect place to add a touch of the unexpected to your family trip!

Bird Kingdom

One of our favourite surprise finds on this trip was Bird Kingdom, the world’s largest free-flying indoor aviary. It was just a short walk from the falls. It was like stepping into a tropical rainforest, with colorful birds flying freely all around us. There are also interactive areas where you can feed some of the birds! Beyond the birds, the exhibits feature reptiles, bats, and a small waterfall, making this a fun and educational break from the more touristy spots. It’s a great activity for a rainy day or when you want a quieter, more immersive experience.

Hershey’s Chocolate World in Niagara Falls is a sweet treat for the whole family! This delightful shop is filled with the rich aroma of chocolate and offers an incredible selection of Hershey’s favourites. From giant chocolate bars and custom mix-and-match treats to unique gifts and souvenirs. We loved snapping photos with the fun chocolate-themed characters and oversized candy displays. Whether you’re picking up goodies to take home or indulging in a freshly made milkshake or baked treat, a visit to Hershey’s Chocolate World adds a deliciously fun stop to your Niagara Falls adventure.
